Can you prevent diabetes?

While you cannot prevent type one diabetes, there are several steps you can take to reduce the chances of developing type two diabetes.

Type two diabetes used to only affect older members of the population but as people are getting heavier and exercising less it is becoming more prevalent.

Here are some ways you can minimise the chances of encountering type two diabetes.

Exercise more

Rather than sitting in front of the TV it is better to put your running shoes on. Regular exercise alone can cut your diabetes risk – in fact, your risk of developing diabetes increases by 20 per cent for every two hours you watch television, according to the Harvard School of Medicine in the US.

There are plenty of exercises you can do and it is best to choose something you enjoy as you will be more likely to stick to it. Try joining a gym, or if that is not down your alley, consider taking up yoga, dancing or joining a social sports team.

Maintain a healthy weight

Keeping a steady body weight is one step to lowering your diabetes risk. This can be achieved through regular exercise and a balanced diet. Try reducing your portion sizes if you are trying to become a healthy weight.

Eat carefully

Choose what you put in your mouth wisely, as it is important to eat well in order to lower your diabetes risk. Below are some tips for a healthy and balanced diet:

  • Choose plenty of fruit and vegetables
  • Eat lean meats
  • Buy whole grain cereals and bread
  • Avoid processed foods, and fizzy drinks high in sugar

Taking these steps will help you to become healthier. Remember that diabetes can also increase your risk of other conditions, according to the American Diabetes Association. Skin infections, glaucoma and neuropathy are more common in diabetics.

Having this illness may also increase your risk of developing hearing loss, so it is essential to reduce your risk of developing it.
